LEARN SOCIAL MEDIA

Effect of social media was beautifully stated in one of the article as- we are no longer users, shoppers, consumers but we are people again! How true.

We all are part of so many social media websites. If you want to explore them more closely for making better usage of them check our learning resources where we are planning to frequently update useful tips and tricks on various platforms. But in this post I’ll be concentrating on the basics of social media.

What is Social Media Anyway?

Social media is a set of websites and applications that enable people to interact and share information online. Social media is being equated as social networking sites such as facebook, MySpace. But really there is more to social media.

Types of Social Media Websites:

1. Social networking sites
2. Social bookmarking sites
3. Video sharing sites
4. Photo sharing sites
5. Social news sites
6. Wikis
7. Social aggregators

Social Networking Sites: Ex: Facebook, LinkedIn, MySpace, Hi5 etc

We use these platforms for making friends, commenting on profiles, joining groups and having discussions.

Social Bookmarking Sites : Ex: Del.icio.us, blinklist, simpy

It is tagging a website and saving it for the future. That is nothing but bookmarking. But using mentioned websites you bookmark websites in the web and not on the web browser also these bookmarks are public hence called as social bookmarking.

Video sharing sites: Ex: YouTube
Videos are very efficient in reaching people and delivering your message. They are not just used for entertaining purpose but for sharing information, marketing products/services and showing expertise to the larger audience.

Photo sharing sites: Ex: Flickr
Interacting with people with similar interests while sharing related photos is a growing trend. Photo sharing sites provide this feature in a full-fledged manner.

Social News sites : Ex: Digg, reddit
This is social bookmarking on news related content. People vote and comment on these news items. In social news focus is on news in sports, technology, politics rather than on websites.

Wikis: Ex: Wikipedia
Wikis are websites which allow any users to create new WebPages and collaborative modification of existing interlinked ones using a web browser.

Social Aggregators: Ex: Friendfeed
Feed agrregators merge the real time updates from social networking sites, social bookmarking sites, microblogging sites, blogs and from RSS/Atom feeds to make the content on the web more relevant and helps in sharing customized feeds.

In the future posts we will be discussing on usefulness of each platform. Happy learning!
